The Family Pet has been our vet of choice when we live in Seattle. ( Hubby was in the Navy so we moved alot) We have always been welcomed with a smile for check ups, and a recived sympathy cards when we lost our Fur Babies. Thank you family pet! You are truly family to us. ~ Aundi H. 3/14/2012

Yelp Reviews
I've moved to Bellevue but Dr. Hilmoe is well worth the drive. Yesterday Scooter Dog was shaky, showed pain upon touch, not interested in food (!!!) and had a tight tummy. I figured he had a kink or blockage, happily approving over 500 dollars thinking he'd need surgery. Turned out he'd hurt his back- he's already doing SO much better on muscle relaxants, pain control and minimal activity. They easily saved me 400 dollars, and more importantly, he's doing great. So, I'm surprised by cost/care problems other reviewers have.
Unless (and I think this might be it) you didn't get the Uber-Vet, Dr. Hilmoe. I also thought Dr. Metzner was terrrific, but she's gone. My feeling is, if you got a good vet, she/he is gold. I trust vets who are current on dietary changes and options as a facet in treatment- again, gold stars for Hilmoe and Metzners. I wouldn't stick with Family Pet per se, but would follow these vets to wherever they landed. Assuming it's, you know, Washington state : ) And maybe Oregon. And Idaho ~ ScooMu N., Redmond, WA 3/3/2012
It was our good fortune to stumble upon this wonderful place! Our dog just had 4 teeth pulled yesterday. We were informed of all the details of the surgery, and time was generously given to us so we knew how to medicate and care for our pup. The doctor was friendly, funny and very knowledgeable. She even called the day after surgery to see how the patient was faring. Unbelievably rare gesture these days! We wholeheartedly recommend this place to all pet lovers. The support staff was also exceptional! Oh, and the prices were very reasonable! ~ Elaine P. 1/28/2012
Great place to take your pets! They've taken great care of my Cavalier. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Dr. Hillmoe is always nice to talk with and very good at taking care of my boy. ~ Mike D 1/1/2012
The Family Pet is a wonderful veterinary clinic. We've been taking our cat Oliver there since he was a kitten. Everyone is so kind. You can tell they truly love animals and go above and beyond to comfort pets and owners. The facility is spotless and the doctors are top-notch. After Oliver was neutered I was expecting him to be groggy and in pain. This was not the case, he wasn't fazed at all! The clinic is accommodating to emergencies and can see pets with very little notice. I trust The Family Pet with my precious fur baby! ~ Skyler jade W 12/22/2011
We arrived at the end of the business day as new patients with a minor emergency. They saw us without hesitation, patiently treated our very sensitive dog, and were equally patient with with our nervous anxiety. The treatment options were clearly outlined and performed with great skill and care. We were expecting a huge bill based on the circumstance but were charged very reasonable rates. We even received a follow up call the next day to check on our recovering patient.
Service above and beyond! ~Kelly M., Seattle, WA, 6/21/2011
I love The Family Pet. All the staff are courteous and really seem to care about the animals. Dr. Mentzer is super wonderful and very cost conscious which is particularly important for my 2 (large) dog/2 cat family. She takes the time to explain all tests, treatments, and options. Love, Wolfie, Lucie, Lizzie, and Ginny. ~ Carmen H., Seattle, WA., 4/20/2011
Very fortunate to have this establishment in Ballard. The staff and Drs. are near perfect and they actually care all the way around. Thank you very much for your expertise and understanding in the name of my pets. ~CATHY O., Seattle, WA, 4/14/2011
We have searched high & low for a vet that suits the needs of our three dogs and their distinct personalities... we have never been happier and are so very pleased to have found you! Thank you to Dr. Hilmoe & the whole staff... you all are amazing, and we all love you! ~ Catherine A., Seattle, WA, 12/15/2010
We just visited The Family Pet for the first time, and it was a great experience. The front desk staff and the vet assistant were both very friendly and patient with my nervous dog. We had Dr. Mentzer, who was very knowledgeable and friendly. She sat and chatted with me for quite a while about issues we'd been experiencing and general health tips for my now middle-aged dog. Once we were all comfortable, she did the exam gently and efficiently. She didn't try to push any extra products or procedures, and even discouraged a vaccination (lepto) that isn't necessary in this area (we're new around here!). The exam only cost us $50. We'll definitely be going back! ~Marisa S., Seattle, WA, 7/22/2010
I've been taking my dog to the Family Pet since she was a puppy upon recommendation from a very good friend who took her Yorkie here until her last days.
This is my first dog, so I have to add a disclaimer that I have not had interaction with other clinics to compare. What I like about the family pet:
- very caring and invested staff. I've never felt as if any vet or assistant is indifferent to my pet or her health status
- easy to get an appointment
- costs explained upfront, (although I always ask)
- they offer ongoing problem solving help around issues like food, (it took quite a while to find a food that my dog, and her intestines, were happy about) and remember to check in about concerns discussed at the last appointment
- at my latest wellness visit they filled out the claim form for my dog's health insurance and faxed it for me
My dog is only 2 and very healthy, but I absolutely plan to continuing my relationship with this clinic and I will update more as she gets older. ~Rebecca P., Seattle, WA, 5/21/2010

“Great, caring pet care”
I've been taking my pets there for a couple years and I always feel like I get caring, attentive care for them. I especially like Dr. Mentzer. And the vet techs are really caring and professional. They all seem to really care about animals. ~Julia M., January 02, 2009
"Compassionate Pet Care"
I have been taking my cats to the Family Pet for over 10 years. Recently my beloved tabby Glenn developed a cancerous tumor and had to be euthanized. The vet (Mary Kay Hilmoe) and staff at the Family Pet were so kind and sensitive. Everything possible was done to make us comfortable and to let him go without any alarm or pain. The vet gave me a much-needed hug afterwards and followed up with a hand-written sympathy note a few days later. After a week had passed, I also received in the mail a small plaster-of-paris disc bearing the imprint of my sweet kittys paw. The compassionate care that my cats (and I!) receive at the Family Pet really sets them apart. As long as I have animals in my life, they will be cared for at the Family Pet. ~Neighborhoodgirl, Dec 31, 2008
"Smart, Professional Service"
I've been bringing my dog here for around 5 years and have always had excellent service. The last visit, a few weeks ago, was another example of this - the vet's examination was, to my dog, indistinguishable from being petted, when in reality she was checking his ears, feeling his weight, etc. They also called to follow up on how his tummy rash was healing. Great vet. ~Jenzwick, Oct 27, 2008
“Highly recommended”
We've been taking our cat to The Family Pet since moving to Seattle a little more than a year ago. The staff and doctors have consistently provided us with friendly and helpful service. They have photo albums full of pictures of pets that owners have brought in for you to look at in their lobby (along with candy for kids and coffee for us grown-ups ;-) ). Recently, doctors Lexi Mentzer and Kevin Reed have joined the practice alongside doctors Mary Kay Hilmoe and Carrie Schneider. We've met with them all during our time there and have always been very pleased. Recommended! ~Chris M., August 28, 2007

Wellness.com Review
I've been taking my pets to "The Family Pet" for over 16 years and would never go elsewhere! The doctors and staff are not only fantastic doctors, but also the most , gentle, compassionate, caring ever. I cannot praise them enough. My dog would get excited and scratch on the door to be let in. They've stayed open past their closing times many times when I've needed help. They've never turned me away when I've needed them. As soon as I walked through the door, I am immediately greeted by the friendly staff. They go out of their way to make me feel special and appreciated. I am going to refer everyone I know here. I absolutely love this place. Their staff is the most friendly, welcoming staff I've ever dealt with. They are so warm and professional, and make the whole experience that much better. –Sunbreaks, 8/1/2011
